How to Install a Modem Driver on the Vista Operating System
- 1). Locate the driver files for the modem. If your modem came with a CD, the drivers may be on the CD. Otherwise, the drivers can be located online.
- 2). Click the "Start" button found in the bottom left-hand corner of your Windows task bar. Locate "Computer" in your Start menu and right-click it. Highlight "Properties" and click it to open the Computer Properties window.
- 3). Click the "Tasks" window and then click "Device Manager." Browse through your device list and locate the modem device. Select your modem device, and then right-click and select "Update Driver Software."
- 4). Select the option to browse your computer for the software. In the next dialog box, select the option to pick from a list, and then click the "Have Disk" button.
- 5). Browse your computer in the "Install from Disk" window. Click "Browse" to select the location of the .inf file for your modem. Select your CD drive and navigate to the location of the .inf in the CD directory if your drivers are located on a disk. Select the computer's hard drive and navigate to the location of the .inf file on your computer if the drivers are stored on your local hard drive. Click the .inf file and then click "Open."
- 6). Follow the prompts in the driver update process to install the driver. This process will vary based upon the specific driver and the model of your modem. Reboot your computer when prompted to do so after the driver installation is complete.
