9 Tips for LGBT Teens on Getting Over a Crush

3

The Crush Factor

Having a crush can be amazing and exciting and a lot of teens love the feeling of being deep in like. But when a crush is never going to turn in into something more, those feelings can move from awesome to awful pretty quick.

In that case, you might just want to get over your crush as fast as you can.

Here are 9 tips for how to do that!
  1. Tell yourself it is never going to happen. Don't fantasize about what it would be like if you were together since imagining what it would be like if you were a couple will feed your crush with a diet of false hope.

  1. If you must think about your crush, try to focus on things you don't like about him or her.
  2. Don't stay home alone. Get out of the house, see people and stay busy. One of the worst thing for an unrequited crush is unstructured time.
  3. Set a goal. Maybe you want to learn to ski, write for your school paper, volunteer somewhere, make some extra cash. Think of something to do that will give you a purpose and that will distract you.
  4. Spend time with other friends. If your crush is in your circle of friends, try to get some distance from him or her. This is important because spending time with a person who doesn't return your feelings is just going to make you feel bad in the end.
  5. Try to meet someone new. Don't close yourself off to the possibility of dating someone else. Sometimes the best cure for one crush is another. (Though you should be careful not to fall into a pattern of unrequited crush hopping).
  6. If you have a crush on someone straight, don't imagine you can "turn" them gay. (And even if feelings are returned, it is important to remember that sexual orientation can't be changed).

  1. Ask yourself if your feelings are becoming obsessive. One way to tell? If your crush takes over your life and you start to do things you wouldn't otherwise do or stop doing things you usually do as a result of your crush.
  2. Give yourself a reality check. You will survive this crush and your head and your heart will mend!

Most crushes don't last forever, but that can be hard to remember when you are deep in the throes of a serious one.  Try to remind yourself that while you are allowed to be bummed out about a crush that doesn't turn into anything, the faster you move on, the better you will ultimately feel!
