Why a Guitar Learning Rut is Your Friend

12
Seems like everybody gets disappointed when they get into a guitar learning rut, but I think it should be something you celebrate.
This article shows you why.
* Did You Say "Guitar Rut"? A rut, or a plateau as some call it, is a common experience as you learn to play guitar.
You know you're in one when you feel like you are playing the same things time and again and are just not making any progress on new skills.
You can easily start to feel fed up with the whole idea of playing guitar.
Sometimes you might even consider giving up altogether in frustration.
* Celebrate! But why be depressed about such a trifling little thing? Instead the guitar rut is something to celebrate! Sounds strange? Well if you're in a guitar learning rut it means that you know something about playing guitar well.
So well in fact that you feel you can't learn any more about it.
If that's not a reason to celebrate then I don't know what is.
So, take off that sad and blue face and celebrate what you've learned.
Take a look back down that road you've travelled and let yourself enjoy all the progress you've made to get to where you are today.
* What's Your Rut Telling You? Now that you've celebrated your guitar rut, recognize it as a friendly messenger.
Yes, the guitar learning rut is trying to tell you something useful.
There is something about your guitar playing or the learning path you are on that is not right for you.
Whatever it is, you hadn't noticed it and were merrily, or rather sadly, carrying on with your usual routine.
That's when the rut comes along to give you the kick you needed to wake you up to the problem.
So now, sit down and talk with your rut.
What is it trying to tell you? Be honest with yourself and ask some hard questions about your playing.
Are you practicing and playing the kind of music you really want to? * Where Are You Going Now? Armed with your diagnostic of where you are now and a picture of the music you want to play you can map out a plan, or maybe just a couple of steps, in a new direction.
Set your sights on a new musical horizon, and get back in the saddle with renewed enthusiasm.
So, now you know why I think that despised guitar rut is really a friend in a time of need.
Next time you find yourself with that down in the rut feeling, wipe off the long face.
Replace it with a smile and welcome that rut as you would your best friend.
Listen to the messages it brings for you.
Decide what you will do about it, then thank that rut and get right back to work on your next guitar projects.
