How to Make Decorative Crosses
- 1). Spread the newspaper over a flat working surface and place the wood cross flat on the paper. Use the ruler and pencil to create straight vertical lines across the decorative cross. Space the lines 1/2-inch apart, starting in the middle of the cross body and going outward along each arm. This should create a vertical striped pattern on the cross with long lines down the middle and short lines on the arms.
- 2). Use a small hand saw to evenly cut the line marks about 1/3-inch deep into the decorative cross. Lightly sand the wood cross to make sure all the surfaces are smooth. Do not sand away the stripes. Dust the sawdust from the cross with a rag.
- 3). Cover the wood with an even layer of metallic gold spray paint. Let the paint soak into the cuts to create a subtle, striped pattern on the wood. Make sure to paint the thin sides of the cross as well. Let the paint dry.
- 4). Take a metal or plastic gold bead with a 1-inch diameter and use superglue to secure it along the 1-inch thick side of the decorative cross. Repeat process until beads are secured around the entire edge of the cross. Let the glue dry.
- 5). Make a small bead cross in the middle-front of the decorative cross using nine beads to create the vertical line with three beads on each side to create the horizontal line. Once you know the exact placement required, glue the beads to the wood. Let the glue dry.
- 6). Cover the wood and beads with a light layer of gold spray paint and let the paint dry. The extra coat makes the wood color solid, disguises superglue stains and covers the beads to fix any scratches.
