Cover Crops - Complete Natural Pest Management
cover crops are being used since decades to get multiple economical and practical benefits. The benefits of having cover crop have been proven by many research studies. Still there are some benefits, which are unknown to many farmers. Pest control management by these crops is one of those. Ecologists tell that stabilized natural systems are diversified at large. Natural system contains variety of plants, mammals, birds, microorganisms and arthropods. Cover crop enhances the diversity of cropping system in a land. In stabilized system, natural control over pest outbreak exists automatically.
Researchers and individual farmers in several countries have observed the increased beneficial insect numbers only because of cover crop. Cover crop provides nectar and pollen besides a space for beneficial insects growth. No till farming method further supports this cause because it leaves the considerable major portion of a field unaltered. No till farming or strip tillage disturbs minimum cover crop harboring beneficial insects. Cover crop, left untilled, may be living or in dying process; in both the cases, it protects beneficial insects. With the growth of main crop, benefits start coming into the pocket of farm owner in multiple ways. If the cover crop is planted at due time, the benefits are more and sooner that make the cover crop planning important. Some innovative farmers interplant the cover crop with main crop. Most of such farmers experience the reduction in need of pesticides and fertilizers.
Cover crops fit well into different cropping systems round the year but it needs proper planning. The nature of major crop, weather conditions and soil nature are the main aspects that need specific attention. To get the maximum advantages of any cover crop, their rotation is also important. Soybean/ Corn rotation accommodates rye cover crop, which scavenges residual nitrogen and provides protective ground cover during fall or winter season. Rye supports water-conservation and suppresses early-season weeds for upcoming soybean crop. Hairy vetch can also be planted after soybeans. It provides nitrogen for corn crop. Not only the grain crops get the benefits of well planned cover crop but the vegetable farming also gets equivalent benefits.
If we do not rotate cover crops, the harming insects under the soil become conditioned to adjust with patterned cover crop and we feel less effectiveness of gap period crop; therefore, cover crop rotation is must for the complete pest management as well as soil management.
