Saw Palmetto: Male Pattern Hair Loss Treatment

8
People with hair loss would not clamor so much for a cure if baldness were like a simple fever. Neither would it be necessary to use treatments at all.

But then, reality bites: male pattern baldness (MPB) is a slow process of killing the hair which is why it is stubborn to reverse without patience and hard work. Worse, it can last years with the sole aim to taunt one's confidence.

It is good news, on the one hand, that most commercially available treatments are directed towards MPB.

Saw palmetto, considered as the men's herb, is one of the most sought-after male pattern hair loss treatment, as an alternative to hair loss drugs such as finasteride and minoxidil.

Saw Palmetto: A Male Pattern Hair Loss Treatment

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a dwarf palm tree which is native to the southeastern coasts of the United States. It bears dark red berries from which the hair growth–stimulating properties come from.

Since centuries past, saw palmetto has been used as a good expectorant and antiseptic. Nowadays, it has been considered as the men's herb because of its ability to effectively function as a male pattern hair loss treatment (i.e., remedying androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness) and to treat men's other common conditions, particularly benign prostatic hyperplasia.

How Saw Palmetto Works

Saw palmetto contains beta-sitosterols and liposterol, which is a good combination against dihydrotestosterone (DHT) build-up in the hair follicles of the scalp. DHT formation alters the way the follicles absorb nutrients, leaving the follicles miniaturized due to malnutrition. Beta-sitosterol and liposterol inhibit the enzyme 5-alpha reductase from catalyzing testosterone into DHT.

In a clinical trial, saw palmetto extracts reduced 5-alpha reductase levels by 32% without changing the production of testosterone. This explains why there are only rare reports from patients of any side effect from this male pattern hair loss treatment. The worse side effect reported was gastrointestinal distress.

Saw palmetto extracts are available in capsules, tablets, liquid extracts, and tea. They are also used as active ingredients in topical product brands such as Leimo.

The suggested daily dosage is 200 mg, which could be increased under supervision by a physician.
