Interview with Karamo Brown

27

Karamo Brown may have shocked the nation when he came out on MTV's The Real World, but to him sexuality is much too fluid for labels. In this interview, Karamo talks about his critics, his childhood and his life of philanthropy.

What's life been like since The Real World?

Life since The Real World has been one blessing after another. I have been able to use my celebrity as a television personality to inspire gay men and women around the country to be proud of themselves and to live their lives to the fullest.

Plus, I am still in my early twenties and living in Hollywood, so being a current television personality often helps when there is a long line to get into a hot night club, if you catch my drift.

Tell us about your charitable organization.

My charitable organization is called the Brave Heart Fund. My partner, Edgardo Nieves, and I started the organization to collect funds and to connect people to those organizations in smaller cities that are working daily to ensure the lives of gay youth are free of persecution and abuse. But more importantly, we are using the organization to inspire a new generation of men and women to be proud of themselves no matter what obstacles they may face.

Your sexuality has always been under attack. How do you feel about labels?

I personally don't care for labels. If verbally attacked I know how to handle it with dignity and a little gangsta. However, when I have to refer to my own sexuality I do so by calling myself 'Same Gender Loving.' I realized traveling around the country that many people are afraid and uneducated when it comes to the word 'gay.' That's why I refer to myself as 'Same Gender Loving.' Everyone can understand the word 'Love.' What I engage in with my partner of three years is love plain and simple.

Who's the Karamo that critics think they know but don't?

Most critics think that I am serious all of the time because I talk about the issues. They also think I'm a bad a** because my clothes fit a little baggier than others. I also don't mind speaking my heart when necessary. But to be honest, I am one of the sweetest guys on the face of the Earth and I love to have a good time. Any time I host a pride celebration or an event and someone wants a hug I give it to them. And I only speak my mind because I know that God has given me this voice to speak for those who are scared or unable to speak for themselves right now. I party any chance I can get, too.

If you could change anything about your childhood what would it be?

Not a single thing! The experiences I had during my childhood helped to make me the man I am today. People often ask if I would have changed anything about The Real Word. It's not only the good, but the bad as well (and what you can learn from both) that makes life worth living and appreciating.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

I'm a 90's kid so anything that has to do with Nintendo or Sega was what I enjoyed playing with. And my sister had this Lite Brite game that I used to like play with as well.

Do you go to gay pride events?

Every chance I get. I have hosted many [prides] and will hopefully be able to host many more. They are great fun: The parties; the sexy men walking around half naked (I know I am in a committed relationship but I can look); the forums... everything.

The one thing that does bother me about gay prides is how segregated they are. I have hosted and attended Black Prides, Latino Prides, Asian Prides and of course White Prides and I hate the fact that you only see a sprinkle of other races mixed in with the majority race. It really gets under my skin, because how are we going to inspire the rest of the country to jump on the gay equality band wagon if we as a gay community are not even on the same band wagon?
