How to Tile a Wet Room
- 1). Clean the installation area with the vacuum. Any particles left behind can impede the waterproofing process, so it is vital to completely clean the surfaces.
- 2). Apply the waterproofing product, using a flat trowel, paintbrush or paint roller. Follow the instructions on the container as to how many coats you should apply, as well as drying time in between coats. Allow a minimum of 24 hours before installing the tile.
- 3). Spread an even layer of thinset mortar in the installation area, using a notched trowel. Do not leave any lumps or uneven sections as this could cause an unlevel installation. Comb the thinset in several directions to completely burn it into the installation surface. Spread only enough thinset for two or three tiles until you are comfortable with your installation speed.
- 4). Place a piece of tile onto the bed of thinset. Apply firm pressure while you gently move the tile slightly in all directions, pressing the tile downward into the bed of thinset. You should hear air being forced out from behind the tile as the bond between the thinset mortar and the tile is completed. Repeat this process for every piece of tile installed.
- 5). Place tile spacers between each piece of tile.
- 6). Make any necessary cuts with a tile wet saw. Dry the back of each tile off completely after cutting them and before installing them in the thinset, as the water from the saw can keep the mortar from bonding to the tile. Allow at least 24 hours drying time before grouting.
