How to Maintain Abu Garcia Baitcasting Reel
- 1). Wipe down the entire surface of the reel with a clean cloth. The goal is to remove any dirt or grime which may have accumulated on the surface of the reel. This will also provide a better opportunity to examine the reel for any damage. Use a small amount of soapy water to aid in removing any stubborn stains, and rinse with clean water.
- 2). Remove the line spool by opening the release mechanism located on the side of the reel. This will allow the spool to be removed for further cleaning. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for more information on accessing the reel.
- 3). Clean the line spool with a cloth and use soap and water if necessary to remove heavy deposits of debris. Use a soft bristle brush to help loosen heavy deposits of pond scum or other deposits. Wipe the spool clean with water and dry thoroughly.
- 4). Inspect the spool seat and any accessible gearing around the spool area. Thoroughly clean the spool seat with a Q tip or cotton swab, wiping away old oil deposits and dirt. Apply a coating of reel oil or multipurpose oil to all exposed parts. Reassemble the spool to the reel.
- 5). Inspect and lubricate the handle or crank of the reel. Remove the reel handle by turning counter clock wise and unscrewing. Apply a small amount of oil to the threads of the reel handle and reassemble.
- 6). Inspect the line guide at the front of the reel. This is the point through which the line passes and is guided as it winds onto the spool. Dirt, grime, and pond scum can accumulate here and should be removed. Use the small brush to loosen any accumulations before using soapy water. Often times it is possible to brush away deposits without wetting.
