How to Engrave Whiskey Glasses
- 1). Dry and clean your whiskey glasses using a clean cloth. This will remove any dirt or fingerprints from the engraving surface. If you bought a box of whiskey tumblers, you do not need to clean them, as they usually come in pristine condition.
- 2). Make photocopies of your images or letters. Enlarge or reduce the image depending on the type of whiskey glasses you are working on. For example, if you are engraving an old-fashioned whiskey tumbler that is 3.5 inches in height and 3.5 inches in diameter, your letters should be about 0.5 inches in height with a width of about 2 or 2.5 inches. Use plain white paper to make copies.
- 3). Cut out the design or letters and place them facing out on the inside surface of the glass. Tape the pattern using clear tape. Trace the design or letters on the exterior surface of the glass using a permanent marker. Remove the pattern when you are done.
- 4). Place a dark non-skid material on the table. This will allow you to have a better view of the glass and the pattern you are about to engrave. The non-skid material will also prevent the whiskey glass from sliding. Wear dust mask and goggles for protection as the glass dust can be harmful. You can also use earplugs if you are distracted by the noise.
- 5). Trace over the pattern you drew using the engraving tool. Gently apply a little pressure on the glass when engraving. Wipe the glass surface frequently to remove any glass powder that accumulates.
- 6). Reduce the pressure on the engraving tool when engraving a tulip-shaped whiskey glass, especially when working close to the edge of the glass. Tulip-shaped glasses are round at the base and become narrower and thinner at the top.
