Tropical plants refer to the native plants of the region around the equator known as the tropics. Tropical plants thrive in the warm and humid areas and generally have a low tolerance for cold temperatures. Climbing flowering are a popular way to cover fences, trellises, bland structural wall, pillars, posts and patios. There are a wide range of tropical flowering plants which differ by flower types and mature plant size.

Mexican creeper has 4-inch, heart shaped foliage and blooms with branching flower stalks of small flower clusters in rose pink to deep coral. The vine grows best in moist, well-drained soil and is moderately tolerant of drought. Mexican creeper is damaged by frost and freeze and but recovers easily if the roots are protected with mulch. The plant can be easily propagated with seeds or cuttings taken in summer.

    Jade Vine

    • Jade vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys) is a native vine of the tropical rainforests of Philippines. The vine is evergreen with thick, woody stems and achieves a mature length of 70 feet or more. Jade vine has trifoliate foliage with three oblong, 3- to 5-inch leaflets and blooms with unusual blue-green claw like flowers in large hanging clusters of over 5 feet in length. The vine grows best in neutral to acidic soil and areas of full sun which get some midday sun relief. The plant has a high water requirement in summer and needs less water during winter. Jade vine has no tolerance for frost.

    Moonflower Vine

    • Moonflower vine (Ipomoea alba) is a rapid growing, twining vine native to the American tropics. The vine thrives in very hot weather and is closely related to the morning glory. Moonflower vine has dark green, 4- to 8-inch heart shaped foliage and blooms with large, white, fluted funnel shaped flowers throughout the summer. The flowers are lightly fragrant and nearly 5 to 6 inches across in diameter. Moonflower vine grows best in well-drained, fertile soil and in areas of full to partial sun.
