How to Prevent Baldness at a Young Age
- 1). Follow a healthy diet. A diet high in caffeine, sugar, carbonated drinks and fat can be detrimental for hair growth. Increase your intake of protein and iron-rich foods. Liver, fish, eggs, beans, cottage cheese, yogurt and tofu are rich sources of protein. Whole-grain cereals, leafy green vegetables, dates and raisins are good sources of iron. Eat these foods every day. Vitamin B is also required for healthy hair growth, and this can be gleaned from eggs, meat and poultry products. Essential fatty acids such as walnuts, fish and soy are important as well. Your diet should also include foods that are rich in vitamin E such as avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil. These food groups will properly nourish the hair at its roots, preventing hair loss.
- 2). Limit your hair styling. Styling products such as gels, hair sprays, harsh shampoos and leave-in conditioners often contain a complex cocktail of chemicals. Stop using these products or switch to ones that contain natural or herbal ingredients. Avoid synthetic products whenever possible, especially while dying your hair. Excessive heat styling can also damage your hair, making it prone to dryness and hair loss. Allow hair to dry naturally and avoid blow-drying.
- 3). Minimize stress. Chronic stress is a condition that will accelerate hair loss. Stress can also lead to bad habits such as comfort eating, smoking and binge drinking, all of which contribute to premature balding. Take time out for yourself. Indulge in exercise, yoga and meditation to rid the body of any residual tension. Don't bring home work. Plan leisure activities just as you would other important tasks.
- 4). Prevent chlorine and salt exposure. A trip to the swimming pool or the beach can wreak havoc with your hair. Exposure to chlorine at the pool (the chemical that is used to cleanse the water) and the salty spray at the beach can cause drying of the follicles, triggering hair fall. Wear a protective cap while in the pool or the sea to minimize exposure. Install shower filters and use chlorine removal shampoos if you live in an area where the public water is treated with chlorine. Also, if you're at the beach or the pool, wear a hat to protect the hair from harsh sunlight.
- 5). Shampoo less frequently. If your hair is prone to dryness and breakage, wash it less frequently, minimizing exposure to harsh shampoos. Wet hair also tends to break more easily. Shampoo once a week and let your hair air-dry.
- 6). Take a multivitamin. If your schedule leaves you little time to plan your meals, take a multivitamin with a glass of water once a day. While this cannot replace a healthy, nutritious diet, it can ensure that your body isn't severely deficient in any vitamin.
