How to Change a Washer Belt on a Front-Load Machine
- Before you begin, turn off the washing machine water faucets and move the washer away from the wall. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws holding the back panel in place on the washing machine, then lift the back panel off the washer.
- Look for the belt inside the washing machine. If you cannot easily spot the belt, there is likely a floor panel in the lower portion of the washing machine that hides the belt from view. Remove the screws holding the panel in place and pull it out. Note that you may wish to lower the washing machine to the floor on its front side to access the inner portion of the washing machine to get to the belt. To do this, put a blanket or a large piece of cardboard on the floor in front of the washer, then tilt the washer down. Be aware that water may splash out during this process. You will need help moving the washer and tilting it forward, as these machines are very heavy.
- Once you have found the belt inside the washing machine, you must remove it before you can install a new one. Take out the clamps that hold the pump coupling, which looks like a piece of rubber or leather that holds the water pump to the motor. Pull out the pump coupling and slide the old belt out of the washing machine. If necessary, loosen the bolts on the motor and push in on the motor to release the tension on the belt, then remove the belt.
- You are now ready to replace the belt. Position the new belt on the transmission pulley, then pull the belt over the motor pulley. Roll the belt slightly to make sure that the belt moves correctly, then tighten the motor mounting bolts if you loosened them earlier. Return the pump coupling to position. If you had to take out a floor panel, replace the panel and tighten the screws. Reinstall and secure the back panel on the washer, then lift the washer into an upright position and push it back against the wall. Restore power to your washer.
