What You Can Do to Prepare for Extreme Weather Conditions

11
No one is exempted from the effects of the weather, especially now more than ever because of the seemingly worsening global warming situation and climate change.
And while we are usually aware of what to expect, particularly when we've grown accustomed to the climate in our areas, the weather can still drastically change, shifting from mild to severe or vice-versa.
Although advanced technology and weather forecasts make it possible for us to see patterns involved, the weather may still surprise us with its unpredictability, showering us with serene and favorable conditions one moment and hounding us with heavy rains and strong winds the next.
It is therefore important to know what we can do in order to be more prepared for severe or extreme weather.
The following tips listed below could help with just that:
  • To be prepared for severe flooding, careful planning is essential.
Everyone in your family must know how and where to seek higher ground in case water levels start to rise.
You can put together a supply kit, for your home and even your family car, that's designed specifically for times of disaster.
Contained within that kit should be the following: first aid supplies, canned goods, flashlights, bottled water, clothing, and a can opener.
  • During severe snow and ice conditions, it is important for you to remember to be careful when walking on slippery ground, crossing sidewalks or simply walking outside.
It is also important to wear protective gloves and hats when out in the cold.
You must also wear appropriate layers of clothing if you intend to go outside to face the cold.
Remember to immediately remove wet clothes as this may cause your body temperature to drop.
  • Being safe from too much exposure to the sun or severe heat is also important.
Blisters and other manifestations of sun or heat irritation can be experienced by anybody so proper protection is needed.
Wearing sunscreen with SPF 15 and above is strongly advised.
Proper hydration is very important so make sure to take in plenty of water especially when temperatures are particularly high.
It also wouldn't hurt to stay away or minimize exposure to the sun when possible.
If you must go out, move into the shade from time to time.
  • Everyone should be aware of tornado watches and warnings, especially when there is a threat of one hitting your area.
Moreover, if the terrifying touch down of the tornado finally occurs, individuals should know where to go.
It could to the basement, the bathroom, a room with no windows or the lowest part or floor of any structure that they happen to be in.
For those living in parts of the country that are frequently visited by tornadoes, it is ideal to have underground safe rooms constructed.
