The Durability of a Wood Fence
- The type of post used to construct a wood fence determines the durability of the fence. Both metal and wood posts may be used to construct a standard wooden slat fence. Fence posts are generally embedded in concrete at ground level, which leaves wooden posts subject to pests and rot. A wooden fence with metal posts will stand straight for much longer than a fence with wooden posts.
- Left uncared for, any wood deteriorates. Annual or semi-annual waterproofing can increase the life span of a wood fence. Waterproofing includes the application of water-blocking clear coats or a fresh coat of paint or stain.
- Certain types of lumber are naturally resistant to decay and pests. The most common decay- and pest-resistant species used to produce fencing materials are redwood and cedar. The cheapest fence slats are often made from hemlock and firs, which degrade faster than redwood and cedar.
