Struggling With Sleep

28
As a college student, you may find yourself facing many different struggles, such as grades, money, or work. This can all lead to a problem that we may not think of as serious. The problem is known as sleeplessness, and it is affecting many of us.  We as students need our rest in order to perform academically to the best of our ability. Unfortunately, I can relate to this problem. I lay in bed for hours before I can fall asleep each night. I can never seem to calm my thoughts and relax. “If you struggle falling asleep at bedtime, or wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep, and this persists for a few days, a few weeks or longer, you suffer from sleeplessness, that robs your body of the rest it requires to re-energize you physically, mentally, and emotionally (Sleeplessness: heartmath.org 1/13/10).”

Studies show that students and people of all ages are affected by sleeplessness. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “about 60 million Americans suffer from insomnia each year (Sleeplessness).” Adolescents are having just as much trouble with sleeping as adults, despite what most people think. Only 20% of children between ages 11 and 17 are getting the proper 9 hours of sleep each night, and of that group, 45% of them are sleeping less than 8 hours. The leading cause of this issue is the everyday problem we call stress. Research has been done to prove that stress triggers both short-term and chronic insomnia. It is almost impossible to avoid stress in today’s world, and as a student the pressure to succeed can cause anyone to lose some sleep here and there. When your heart rhythms are not in sync, it can cause restlessness throughout the night (Sleeplessness).
