9
A sleepless night can sap the energy and motivation out of you.
You feel exhausted irritable, on edge and unable to tackle the day head on.
But why do you feel like a sack of 'you know what' without good night sleep and what makes you experience sleeplessness? Sleep is a fairly complex process which is made up of two types of sleep; REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and non-REM.
REM is a stage associated with dreaming.
NREM is divided into four stages.
You may not be aware that you're going through these 5 stages through the night to the morning, but you will probably remember having dreamt.
You may find that after a good night's sleep that you feel refreshed and energized.
Sleep enables you to restore and rejuvenate many functions of the mind and body.
Muscles relax and blood and oxygen is pumped into muscles and organs to restore muscular energy.
Sleep enables us to fight off infections, diseases and infections.
This may be why we tend to sleep a lot when we are ill.
Without, your immune system may weaken leaving you prone to illnesses.
Without proper sleep you may experience aches and pains, tiredness, irritability during the day and feelings of inability to cope with normal life.
People who suffer from regular bouts of sleeplessness are prone to developing psychological disorders such as depression and anxiety.
Chronic insomnia sufferers often experience low mood and concentration in the day.
Sleep seems to organize memories, as well as helping you to recover memories, it also improves mental concentration.
An important note to remember is that the importance isn't measured by the quantity.
5 hours of quality sleep is far more beneficial to health compared to 10 hours of disruptive light sleep.
If you fail to enter the deeper stages of sleep, you may find that you feel tired and groggy even with 12 hours of sleep.
Most of us have experienced a sleepless night during some point in our lives, however some people have suffered for months or years without any hope of regaining the ability to sleep properly.
But there is hope, and there's no need for sleeping pills or expensive treatment.
