25

    Types

    • There are two types of Synvisc knee treatments: Synvisc and Synvisc-One. According to synviscone.com, the only difference between the two is that Synvisc-One requires only a single injection, while regular Synvisc requires three (Reference 1).

    Procedure

    • Synvisc injections are performed at your doctor's office in a matter of minutes. Synviscone.com advises that you not perform any strenuous activities for 48 hours after the procedure (Reference 1).

    Considerations

    • Synviscone.com states that it may be as much as one month before Synvisc injections take effect. If your osteoarthritis knee symptoms return after this time, call your doctor (Reference 1).

    Side Effects

    • Synvisc knee injections may be very painful (Reference 2). Other side effects may include rash, swelling, stiffness and fluid buildup near the injection site (Reference 1).

    Prevention/Solution

    • According to the Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center, there are methods the physician can utilize to reduce the pain associated with Synvisc knee injections. First, your doctor may spray a numbing topical anesthetic on your knee prior to the injection. Another method is to inject an anesthetic into your knee before administering Synvisc (Reference 2).
