If you are looking into house training a dog, then this article was written for you. We are going to look at severeal things. First, we will look at what you should not do to stop your dog from peeing in the house. Secondly, we will look at the things that work, and that you should do to to stop your dog from peeing. When you are done reading, you will have a great head start on house training your dog.

The first place to start is by looking at why your dog pees in the house in the first place. One of the major reasons is that your dog is probably marking his territory. Dogs have a very good sense of smell. If they smell another dog in the home, they want to establish their territory. You may have actually had a dog in the house, or you could simply have come in contact with another dog, and your dog would smell it. Most of the time, male dogs are the ones that mark their territory. Certain breeds are also more likely to engage in this.

So what is the solution to this problem?

When you are house training a dog, the first impulse is to get upset and punish your dog. This method does not work. You will only confuse them more. By getting upset, you have not told them what they are doing wrong. You simply scolded them.

A much better approach to this, is to provide some positive reinforcement for the dog. Let them know what they are doing right.

So what are some methods to use that actually work? Well one solution is to use crate training. This may seem like punishment, but it is really not. Your dog may actually enjoy having his own private space. More importantly though, he will not pee in an enclosed space where he has to stay. Try keeping him in the crate for a few hours, and then taking him outside to pee where you want him to. Once he does, give him lots of praise to let him know that he did a good thing. This will affirm that he is supposed to pee outside, not in the house.

Another option when house training a dog, it to try and distract him before he pees in the house. Get a shaker, or noise maker of some kind, and distract him before he pees. Once distracted, you can take him outside and let him pee.

These are two of the best methods that you can use to train your dog. All it takes is some patience and persistance and you will have your dog trained in no time.
