How to Replace Front Disc Brakes in a Nissan Maxima

    • 1). Park the vehicle on a flat and level surface. Apply the parking brake. Secure the vehicle by wedging something behind the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Loosen the lug nuts. Jack the vehicle up and support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.

    • 2). Siphon brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir until it is approximately one-third full by using a syringe, turkey baster, or similar tool. The old fluid will not be reused so throw it away. Disconnect and remove the wheel and tire assembly.

    • 3). Remove the bottom guide pin from the caliper and swing the caliper cylinder body up and out of the way. Using mechanic's wire, suspend the caliper cylinder body from the Maxima frame. Do not disconnect the brake hose. Keep the caliper cylinder body from dangling from the brake hose or it will damage the brake hose. Remove the brake pad retainers and the pads.

    • 4). Compress the piston of the disc brake caliper. Install the brake pads. Put anti-squeaking on the outside of the pad. Avoid putting it inside of the brake pad. Reinstall the brake pad retainers and the reconnect the caliper cylinder body. Using a torque wrench, torque the guide pin to 16 to 23 foot/pounds. Reconnect the wheel and tire assembly. Using a torque wrench, torque the lug nuts to 62 foot/pounds.

    • 5). Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery. Add brake fluid. Start the engine and pump the brakes 3 to 4 times. Test drive the Maxima at slow to moderate speeds to ensure that the maintenance was performed correctly.
