How to Obtain a Tax ID Number for Business
- 1). Get the SS-4 form from the IRS. This is the Application for Employer Identification. It is available for download from the IRS website. Another option is to call (800) 829-3676 to have one mailed to you.

Send the form to (859) 669-5760 by fax if you are in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia. Submit it via fax to (215) 516-1040 if you do not have a legal residence, principal place of business, or principal office or agency in any state. Include your fax number on the form to get an EIN faxed to you within about 4 days.
- 3). Call the IRS to get your EIN at (800) 829-4933. The phone application system is available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday (Pacific Time for Alaska and Hawaii). If you are outside the U.S., call (215) 516-6999. Only the authorized signer of the SS-4 or his authorized designee can get an EIN over the phone.
- 4). Apply for an EIN on the IRS website. If you are not in the U.S. or a U.S. territory, you must mail, call or fax to get your EIN. The online EIN system is available from Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. Eastern time, Saturday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern time and Sunday from 7 p.m. to midnight Eastern time.
