Why A Good Resume Is Important

35
The world of employment is extremely competitive, especially in today's economy.  Millions of people are vying for jobs each day, and each person is represented by one document: their resume.  As your sole representation to potential employers, your resume is a very important manuscript.

A good resume does three things: it catches the attention of potential employers, it enumerates your qualifications and skills, and it sells your capabilities.

In order to catch the attention of potential employers, a resume does not have to be flashy or organized in an ornate way.  In fact, spending extra time picking out pretty borders and fonts is a misdirection of your energy.  Your resume should be easy to read and targeted to the specific job you want.  By focusing your resume on the skills needed to accomplish the job you are applying for, you will be more likely to stand out in the minds of those who read it.  This may mean that you will need to write more than one resume, depending on how many different kinds of jobs you are applying for.  While this is acceptable, remember to keep the resumes organized and truthful.

When enumerating your qualifications and skills, make sure that you only list those that pertain to the job in question.  Although pig wrangling is an interesting and memorable skill, it does not have anything to do with accounting.  The goal is to be memorable, but you don't want to be remembered for the wrong reasons.  By tailoring your qualifications and skills to meet the needs of the company, your potential employer will be more apt to see you as a good fit for the position.

When selling your capabilities, do not make your resume sound like an advertisement.  The tone of the writing should be factual and confident, making you seem capable and competent.  This is where word choice plays a major part in the construction of your resume.  You need to know when to use specific words, indicating that you have specialized training or knowledge, and when to use more vague words, indicating that your knowledge base is wide in that subject.

Because your resume is such an important part of your life, it's a good idea to turn to a professional writer to compose your resume.  This document is your key to your future, to your career, to what you spend the rest of your life doing.  It is wise to entrust such a monumental investment to a professional writer.
