Gold Leaf Projects for Children

11

    Wish Stones

    • Wish stones are river pebbles with words or symbols carved in or painted on them. Each symbol or word means something positive to encourage you on a bad day or to give a good day an even higher boost. Your children can make wish stones with a few river pebbles from a nearby stream or your local craft store. You'll also need scrapbook shape punches; stars, animals and geometric shapes work well. Punch shapes from double tack mounting film, and press the shapes on to your stones. Peel away the paper backing, and lay a sheet of gold leaf on top. Brush away the excess--the leaf will only stick to the mounting film.

    Christmas Ornaments

    • Gold leafing turns faded ornaments or clear craft balls into shiny Christmas decorations. Help your children apply an even layer of spray adhesive to the top half of each ornament. Gently press a gold leaf sheet on to the adhesive, and brush away excess with a soft paintbrush. Let the ornament dry for about one hour, and repeat on the bottom half. You also can do this with silver and copper leaf. Embellish a little more by wrapping a ribbon around the center of each ornament or dotting them with plastic rhinestones.

    Cardboard Coins

    • Making St. Patrick's Day coins from cardboard and gold leaf can help use up bits from other craft projects. Cut quarter-sized circles from heavy cardboard, and create your own coin designs by drawing shamrocks or Irish harps on each cardboard circle. Outline the shapes with white puff paint so the design sticks up. Spray one side of each coin with spray adhesive. Lay a piece of gold leaf sheet on the cardboard, and brush away the excess with a soft paintbrush. Let the glue dry for one hour, and repeat on the other side.
