How to Change the Rear Brakes on a 2000 Ford Focus

    • 1). Park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the ignition. Loosen the vehicle's rear lug nuts with the socket wrench. Raise the Ford's rear end with a jack. Support the vehicle's rear end with jack stands. Remove the jack and set it aside.

    • 2). Unscrew the Ford's lug nuts, counterclockwise, using a 13 mm socket wrench and take off the wheels.

    • 3). Unscrew the four bolts from the spindle using the socket wrench and pull off the brake drums from the Ford's brakes. Attach the wrench to a swivel adapter and extension piece if you cannot reach the spindle bolts.

    • 4). Push at the side retaining clips with a screwdriver to remove the clips from the Ford.

      Pull and disconnect the parking brake cable from the brakes. Remove the brakes.

    • 6). Hold the pin located behind the brake drums, press on the clips with side cutters and let go of the pin to reassemble the retaining clips. Slide the new brakes into place.

    • 7). Attach the parking brake cable and press down on the pistons from the top of the brakes. Reassemble the spindle.

    • 8). Place the lug nuts on the wheels and hand-tighten the nuts, turning clockwise. Place the car jack under the rear of the car and raise it to the car frame. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts with the socket and wrench.
