Motorcycle Clutch Installation

    • 1). Remove the clutch cover which is usually located on the right side of the motorcycle, just above the foot-peg. Remove the cover's bolts with an Allen wrench. Set the bolts aside for later use.

    • 2). Unscrew the clutch pressure plate. This is held on by bolts that will require a socket. Once it is unbolted, gently pry the plate free.

    • 3). Remove all of the clutch plates, setting them aside on a rag and stacking them in the order they are removed.

    • 4). Inspect the clutch basket once the plates are all removed. The basket should be uniform with no grooves or nicks.

    • 5). Open the new clutch pack and remove the fiber plates. Soak the new fiber plates in motor oil for five minutes.

    • 6). Slide the new plates into the clutch basket in the exact order as the old ones that were removed. Since you set the old ones aside and stacked them in the proper order, you can check them while you install the new plates to ensure they are being installed in the proper order. The steel plates have a rounded edge and a sharp edge; it does not matter which side you face outward as long as they are all facing the same way.

    • 7). Reinstall the pressure plate over the new clutch. Tighten the bolts down with a wrench per the specifications in your owner's manual.

    • 8). Remove the old gasket out of the clutch cover with a gasket scraper.

    • 9). Clean the area where you removed the old gasket from with contact cleaner and a rag. This will help the new gasket adhere to the surface.

    • 10

Install the new gasket by first applying sealant to the mounting surface then putting the new gasket into place.

    • 11

Reinstall the clutch cover by bolting it back into place using the same pattern you removed the bolts. Let the motorcycle sit for at least an hour so the gasket sealant can dry before driving it.
