John Deere Lawn Mower History
- Already known for their farm and industrial equipment, John Deere decided in 1963 to begin selling lawn and garden tractors with attachments like mowers and snow blowers. The first lawn tractor was model 110 and, by 1966, it had helped the lawn and garden equipment sales rise 76 percent worldwide.
- Between 1974 and 1979 John Deere's business was running at such high levels that they had to build new facilities to keep up with the demand. They spent more than $1 billion in the process.
- In 1987 John Deere charted new territory and designed a line of lawn mowers for the golf course market.
- "Sabre by John Deere" became the new line of four mid-priced lawn tractors and two walk-behind mowers. For the first time lawn and garden equipment sales were more than $1 billion.
- In 2003 John Deere made an agreement with Home Depot. They would now sell their riding mowers in the mass market for the first time in their company's history.
