How to Feed a Dog With Tapeworms
- 1). Provide a high-protein diet. "Natural Dog Health" recommends the diet consist of 40 percent meat and eggs. Most dogs tolerate turkey and lamb, unless allergies are present but vary the diet. "Dog Aware" recommends rotating beef, chicken, lamb and turkey rather than feeding one protein source.
- 2). Feed edible bones to provide calcium. Most raw bones supply the right amount of calcium. However, if the idea of feeding a raw bone makes you squeamish, consider supplementing your dog's diet with calcium powder or pills. The amount to feed varies by the weight of your dog. Never feed cooked bones; they can splinter and seriously injure your dog. Supervise your dog while it is eating bones.
- 3). Add a soft- or hard-boiled egg or cooked scrambled eggs to your dog's food. Feed one to two eggs per week.
- 4). Add omega-3 fatty acids to your dog's diet to support the immune system. Add fish oil or salmon oil, approximately 1,000 mg per 30 pounds of body weight for a healthy dog daily; 1,000 mg per 10 pounds of body weight for an unhealthy dog. Always add vitamin E to the diet when supplementing fish oils: 100 IU per day for small dogs, 200 IU for medium-sized dogs and 400 IU for large dogs, "Dog Aware" advises. Please note that fish oil, not cod liver oil, should be used.
- 5). Grind whole, raw pumpkin seeds. Make sure to grind to a powder just before adding to your dog's meal. Add 1/4 to 1 tsp. to your dog's meals, depending on your dog's size. The pumpkin seeds help clean out tapeworms from the intestines.
- 6). Control yeast and unhealthy bacteria in the intestines with probiotics, which can help control diarrhea and strengthen the immune system. Live-culture yogurt can also be used.
