How to Replace a Switch for a Fan
- 1). Turn off the breaker that controls the fan in the main panel. If you cannot locate the proper breaker, turn off the main circuit.
- 2). Remove the switch cover. Test for power with a meter.
- 3). Remove any screws that anchor the switch within the box. Pull out the switch.
- 4). Loosen the screws on the side of the switch that hold the electrical wires. Remove both wires and the green ground wire. Discard the malfunctioning switch.
- 5). Install the new switch. Attach the electrical wires with the screws on the side of the new switch and the ground wire to the green screw. Tighten the screws snugly to ensure that there is a good connection and no chance of the wires becoming loose in the box.
- 6). Push the new switch into the box. Anchor it to the box with screws.
- 7). Replace the switch cover and turn the breakers back on. Test the switch to ensure that it is working properly.
