How to File Federal Tax Returns That Are Overdue by Several Years
- 1). Go online to www.irs.gov and print the forms and schedules needed to prepare your overdue tax returns. Keep in mind that past-due returns must be mailed and cannot be filed electronically.
- 2). Call the local IRS office (see Resources below) to request a copy of your wage and income information. This will include all W-2s and 1099s for the years requested. If you prefer, you can also request this information be mailed to you by completing IRS Form 4506-T and sending it to the IRS. Allow at least two weeks to receive your income information in the mail.
- 3). Mail your delinquent returns to the IRS office that processes returns for your area. If you are not sure which campus processes returns for your region, log on to IRS.gov for details. Make sure you mail each tax return in a separate envelope. Although this will force you to buy a few more stamps, it helps to prevent your return from being lost by the IRS submission processing center.
