How to Change the Fuel Filter at Mile Intervals
- 1). Turn your vehicle off.
- 2). Check your owner's manual to determine whether the fuel filter is in the engine compartment or below the vehicle. Raise the vehicle with the car jack and two jack stands if the fuel filter is below the vehicle. Place wheel blocks around the opposite wheels. Prop open the hood with the hood support rods if the fuel filter is in the engine compartment.
- 3). Loosen the front side of the fuel filter first. This side has less pressure than the back side of the filter. Loosen the front side of the fuel filter by placing one crescent wrench on the fuel line hex nut, and one crescent wrench on the fuel filter hex nut. Twist the fuel filter hex nut until it is loosened. Pull the fuel line out of the fuel filter.
- 4). Repeat the previous step on the back side of the filter.
- 5). Loosen the two bolts securing the fuel filter mounting bracket to the chassis. Do not remove the bolts completely. Slide the fuel filter out of the bracket.
- 6). Insert the replacement fuel filter through the mounting bracket in the same orientation the previous fuel filter was set. Tighten back on the fuel line to the fuel filter, starting with the front fuel line. Re-tighten the bolts to the fuel-filter mounting bracket
