If your face is a combination of oval and heart-shaped, the widest point is at your cheekbones and the narrowest point is at your chin. You can use your hairstyle to balance these prominent features as long as you choose a style with volume in the right place. Avoid styles with lots of volume on top, as this can elongate your face and draw attention to a pointed chin. - Stylist Frederic Fekkai tells Glamour Magazine that bangs can "help to balance out a long face or soften facial features." They'll draw attention to your eyes and the upper part of your face, so they're great for camouflaging full cheeks or a pointy chin. Keep the bangs at brow level; you don't want to be brushing them out of your eyes all day. Avoid super-thick bangs, as these can have a robot-like painted-on look. Keep them soft and slightly wispy so they have natural movement. Long, straight hair completes the look, visually shortening a long face.
- If your face is more oval than heart-shaped, chances are its dimensions are more long than wide. To balance out the length, add horizontal volume. An easy way to do this is with choppy layers. Ask your stylist to add razored layers to your cut at graduated lengths, starting at eye level. When you style the layers, use a curling iron to flip them outward. This draws the eye horizontally, balancing the vertical line of an oval-shaped face and the strong chin of a heart-shaped face.
- New York City hairstylist Patrick Melville recommends a short bob for women with oval and heart-shaped faces. The best lengths for your face shape are cheekbone length or chin \-length. Avoid a super-short brow-length bob--this is a cut that's long on top with sideswept bangs and very short or shaved sides, as seen on Rihanna during the fall 2009. This cut will only accentuate the length of your face; you want to provide a visual contrast to your cheekbones or chin. If you have a long forehead you want to camouflage, ask for sideswept bangs---they'll create a diagonal line across the forehead, breaking up the face and making it appear shorter. If you have the traditional pointed chin of a heart-shaped face, make sure your cut is chin length or longer.
- The strong cheekbones of a heart-shaped face work well with a pixie cut, according to hairstylist Barmoha. Attention is drawn to your upper face, neutralizing a strong jaw line or a pointed chin. You don't want anything too spiky or volumized, though---the goal isn't to add height to a long face. Keep it a true pixie cut and not a super-short bob. Pixie cuts have the added benefit of being very easy to style. If you're a wash-and-go person, this is a good cut to choose.
