How to Take Care of New Sod

29
    • 1). Install sod as soon as it is delivered. Roll out the mats and lay flat on the ground. Lay the mats of sod next to each other and touching the other mats.

    • 2). Irrigate the sod immediately after it has been laid. Drill small holes by running a lawn aerator over the entire lawn and ensure that the holes are at least six inches deep. This allows water to penetrate deep into the ground and prevents the root system of the sod from becoming tangled together. Water the sod thoroughly to the point of saturation.

    • 3). Continue to water the sod at least two to six times a day until the grass takes root. Reduce watering after about 12 days and allow the grass to grow for two weeks before mowing. Mow the new grass at the highest blade setting.

    • 4). Allow the sod to become established for the next three to four weeks. Gradually reduce the number of waterings, while increasing the length of each watering by a few minutes.

    • 5). Fertilize the sod after a month of growth. Continue to mow it when the grass reaches about five inches in height.
