According to the National Bank of Poland’s (NBP) website, the National Bank of Poland holds the exclusive right to issue the currency of the Republic of Poland. The two currency options in Poland currently in circulation consist of banknotes (zloty) and coins (grosz and zloty), where $1 USD (United States Dollar) is roughly equivalent to about zl3.18 PLN (Polish Zloty), based on currency exchange rates as of July 2010. However, these exchange rates fluctuate daily. - The National Bank of Poland currently offers five different types of banknotes now in circulation: a 10 zloty note, 20 zloty note, 50 zloty note, 100 zloty note and 200 zloty note. It is important to point out that with each increasing increment, the banknote’s design and characteristics also change. Each features a prominent Polish political leader and various historic elements. Like the United States Dollar, the Polish Zloty also contains an array of nine embedded security features to prevent counterfeit reproduction. A list of banknotes with links to their various characteristics can be found at http://www.nbp.pl/homen.aspx?f=/en/banknoty/banknoty.htm.
- The National Bank of Poland also has nine different coins in circulation. A grosz (or groszy, if more than one coin) is measured in increments of one, two, five, ten, 20 and 50, where one grosz is equal to one one-hundredth of a zloty. The first three groszy are minted in brass, whereas the remaining three groszy are minted in cupro-nickel. The bank also offers three zloty coins (in increments of one, two and five), where one zloty is equivalent to a zloty banknote and are either minted in cupro-nickel or bimetallic.
- In addition to previous generations of banknotes and coins that are considered “collector’s items,” the National Bank of Poland has also created limited-edition banknotes and coins that portray prominent Polish leaders or represent well-respected events or anniversaries linked to Poland. These non-circulated collector currencies are often sold outside of Poland at an attractive price. More information on these banknotes and coins can be found in the Resources section.
