How to Install a Replacement Dryer Cord
- 1). Unplug the old three-prong dryer cord from the wall. Trace the power cord from the plug to the back of the dryer and locate the cover plate that protects the terminal block where the cord is attached.
- 2). Loosen the screw, or screws, that hold the terminal cover plate in place. Examine the position of the wires that will typically involve a neutral wire in the middle with a hot wire connection on each side. Loosen the terminal screws holding the wires in place and also loosen and remove the ground strap in the center if it is attached.
- 3). Attach the replacement cord to the dryer by securing the red and black hot wires to each end of the block and the neutral white wire to the middle. Attach these wire in the same manner as the old three-prong plug wire.
- 4). Drill a hole in the frame of the dryer with a drill and bit that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the self tapping machine screw you will be using. Secure the green ground wire to the frame of the dryer with the machine screw.
- 5). Tighten all connections securely with a flat blade screwdriver and replace the cover on the terminal. Plug the dryer into the four-prong outlet.
