How to Fix a Cracked Wall Around an Electrical Outlet

7
    • 1). Remove the faceplate from the electrical outlet. This gives you have a clear view of the crack in the wall, and the faceplate does not get damaged during the repair. Wipe the wall down with a clean cloth to remove any dirt or loose plaster particles.

    • 2). Examine the crack in the wall and determine the direction of the crack. Press gently against the wall to determine if the drywall is loose. Remove any drywall tape and mud from the cracked drywall area.

    • 3). Locate the wood studs behind the drywall. Secure the loose drywall to the wall stud with drywall screws. If the drywall remains loose, the problem will reoccur.

    • 4). Scrape the crack with a utility knife or screwdriver to open the gap in a V-shape. Wipe the drywall dust from the wall and the crack. The larger opening allows the drywall mud to get into the groove of the crack and bond with the existing wall.

    • 5). Open the drywall mud container and use a putty knife to apply the mud to the crack. Work the mud into the crack. Use the edge of the knife to push the mud as deep into the crack as possible. Smooth the applied mud with the putty knife so that the section you are repairing is level with the existing wall.

    • 6). Apply a piece of drywall tape to the crack while the mud is still wet. Run the tape in the same direction, directly over the crack. Smooth the tape into place with a small amount of drywall mud on the putty knife. Your hand puts too much pressure on the drywall mud and could create a dent in the wall.

    • 7). Allow the drywall mud to dry completely. Sand the repaired area with a fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe the area with a clean cloth to remove any dust. Apply the finish of your choice to the wall.
