How to Put Oil in MGB Shocks
- 1). Remove one of the four shock absorbers by first separating the pin at the end of the bolt that holds the shock absorber to its mounting trunnion on the axle. Next, remove the nut that secures the bolt using a wrench or pressure pliers. Gently hit the exposed, threaded end of the bolt with a plastic-headed hammer to ease it out of the trunnion.
- 2). Pry the shock absorber away from the trunnion with a crowbar. Remove its four mounting bolts with a 3/8-inch long socket and ratchet wrench to separate it from the frame of the car. Repeat for the three remaining shocks.
- 3). Position one shock on a work surface that is protected against oil so that the panel, which has two columns of four screws each, faces upward. Remove each of the eight screws with a Philips-head screwdriver. Pull the panel off the body of the shock to expose the shock chamber.
- 4). Gently remove the gasket at the top of the oil reservoir and put it aside. Stand the shock on the ferrules where the fulcrum pin connects the shock to the trunnion. Remove the valve assembly under the four-hole body mounting bracket with a 7/8-inch socket attached to a ratchet drive.
- 5). Invert the shock over an oil drain pan or basin and pour out all existing oil from the shock chamber.
- 6). Fill the shock chamber with regular engine oil of any weight or type and pour it out to rinse the shock chamber.
- 7). Replace the gasket and secure it to the edges of the mouth of the shock chamber, using silicone adhesive if necessary. Fill the shock chamber with 20W oil to just below the level of the gasket.
- 8). Replace the panel and tightly fasten each of the eight screws to secure it to the shock. Turn the shock over on its side. hold the shock by one of its arms so that the opening for the valve assembly stands fully straight and upright.
- 9). Insert a funnel into the opening of the valve assembly and slowly pour oil into the hole as you move the arms up and down to distribute the oil. Keep adding oil until the hole is completely full. Move the arms up and down until you no longer see bubbles.

Replace the valve and tighten it. Wipe away any excess oil from the housing with a rag. Clean and paint the shock as necessary or desired. - 11
Repeat Steps 3 to 10 for each of the three remaining shocks and re-mount all four shocks to their axles and body.
