Gearheads Go For Gear Wrenches

42
Anybody who's ever been seriously into tools knows that gearheads go for gear wrenches mainly because they're so easy to use and are fairly versatile.
A good set of these wrenches, made with nicely-cast metals and not some cheap pot metal, can fill a place in any professional or even backyard mechanic's toolbox that will enable him or her to fix almost anything, but especially motorcycles and cars.
That's because these wrenches -- which are sometimes known more familiarly as ratcheting and reverse-ratchet wrenches -- are made to fit into many a tight place that standard wrenches just aren't able to fit into.
And once in there, taking advantage of their ability to loosen or tighten up a bolt head is almost unparalleled.
This is because the wrench head, once slipped over the bolt, can be utilized without having to lift it up and off the bolt in order to tighten or loosen that same bolt.
Just slip it on and start turning.
Some of these wrenches also can be reversed-ratcheted, meaning that a simple flip of a lever or switch will allow the wrench to turn the bolt in a clockwise or counterclockwise manner.
Given how common many vehicles and motorcycles are in terms of their metric sizes when it has to do with bolts and screws, it's always recommended that anybody looking to fix or repair anything have at least several metric wrenches and several standard wrenches.
A good 12 piece metric set usually runs somewhere around $140 or so.
This is a very good price for such a versatile set of wrenches, by the way.
There are several different types of these wrenches available, and however many are needed would be totally dependent on the scope and complexity of the job that one is doing and which requires one of these wrenches.
Some mechanics -- especially the pros -- prefer to have at least a small collection of each type, including S-reversible and a locking flex head ratcheting set.
With a straight set, the reversible set and a locking flex head ratcheting set, pretty much anything can be assembled or disassembled (at least in terms of all of its bolts) in short order and with a minimum of effort or fuss.
Most good sets come in highly polished chrome, have a relatively thin profile, a flexible head and can be ratcheted with only 5 degrees of movement, so keep this in mind.
Gear wrenches come in a wide variety of lengths, sizes and are made of a variety of metals.
Going with a good set of decent quality, rather than buying a cheap set at a discount auto parts store that's usually made of cheap pot metal, will save a lot of aggravation both in the short and the long term.
Remember, it's a poor mechanic who blames his tools for his shortcomings, so don't buy cheap tools.
