Spanish-style landscaping is influenced by Moroccan, Arabian and other Mediterranean landscaping styles. It creates a cool, calming and private retreat protected from the region's considerable summer heat. It also takes advantage of the region's mild winters. Spanish-style landscapes almost always include edible plants, vines and trees. - Filled with citrus, palms, evergreens and grapevines, Spanish-style landscaping features plants adapted to hot, dry summers and mild winters. Herbs like lavender, rosemary and sun-loving flowers such as roses and daisies are also common in Spanish landscaping style.
- Pergolas, arbors and other shade-giving structures are common in Spanish landscaping design. At least one formal, permanent outdoor living space is featured. Free-standing or wall fountains add the element of water so desired in a dry climate. Plants growing in terracotta pots line patios and isolated stone---or clay-tiled pathways that meander through lush garden beds.
- The stucco exterior walls of Spanish-style architecture are echoed with stucco walls that divide or enclose the surrounding Spanish-style landscape. Pots and clay tiles made of terracotta, colorful Moroccan-inspired tiles and mosaic-type accents in deep, rich colors are characteristic of Spanish-style landscaping.
