People in the UK are increasingly looking at ways in which they can make their home more environmentally friendly.  Fortunately there are a number of ways in which a property can be made more energy efficient.  One such option is to install a small scale wind turbine and generator.

As a cheap source of electricity domestic wind turbines are being used more and more by households throughout the country.  By using the power of the wind a turbine can be used to supply some of a home’s electricity needs.  As a natural and renewable form of energy using wind power is an environmentally friendly solution.  Domestic wind turbines can be used to generate electricity that would otherwise have been drawn from the national grid and so the carbon footprint of the household is reduced.

The effectiveness of the wind turbine will depend on its location.  Turbines will only work to their full potential in certain areas where it is particularly windy.  Generally when deciding if it is worthwhile to install the turbine the homeowner should consider factors including wind speed, direction and the local landscape.  Although not suitable for all properties many people will find that the turbine does generate a significant amount of electricity.  In city centre locations wind power may not be a realistic solution so as an alternative solar panels could be used instead.

As well as being an effective way to reduce the carbon footprint of a household installing a small scale wind turbine can make financial sense.  With the turbine generating some of the homes electricity less energy from gas and electricity providers will be needed and so bills will be reduced.  Although not a cheap option it is realistic that through saving in energy bills the turbine will pay for itself in the medium to long term.
