Men Are Vulnerable to the Sun

28
The Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program, as part of the National Cancer Institute, is a premier source for cancer statistics in the United States.
SEER collects information on incidence, survival, and prevalence from specific geographic areas representing 26 percent of the US population and compiles reports on all of these plus cancer mortality for the entire US.
According to SEER an estimated 34,950 men died of melanoma in 2008.
The men at highest risk of developing melanoma are those aged 55-64, followed closely by those 65-74.
These are the men we love dying of a preventable disease.
Why? The statistical groups were made up of the men who grew up with "macho" stereotypes - real men don't wear sunscreen, don't get facials, and they don't use skin care products.
In their defense, until recently, sunscreen wasn't all that.
It was thick, heavy on the skin, hot and got into the eyes if you perspired.
Today, even sunscreens with a physical block (titanium dioxide and/or zinc) are much easier to use.
Why would any man get a facial? Aside from the relaxing qualities, getting the skin deeply clean, increasing skin circulation and nourishing the skin with good ingredients the skin care specialist should be carefully looking at the skin.
When I see something concerning on the skin, I will mention it to my client as something that they might want to have looked at.
I'm no doctor, but I am looking at you with 8 to 10 magnification glasses so I see more than you - I'm another pair of eyes so that if there is a problem, it doesn't get too far.
I have many clients who can attest to the value of that other pair of eyes.
Why would any man use skin care products? Skin care products are not just for girls.
Formulations for men feed and hydrate the skin.
They are light on the skin with simple steps - usually a serum and sunscreen for day and a serum and perhaps a hydrator for night.
Men are catching on - the men's skin care market hit $76.
5 million in 2005 and continues to increase as our men desire healthy, youthful skin.
