How to Install a Defroster Thermostat on a G.E. Top Freezer Refrigerator
- 1). Unplug the refrigerator from the wall outlet.
- 2). Remove the air ducts from the rear wall of the freezer. To remove the air ducts, remove the screws securing them to the cabinet and then pull the ducts out.
- 3). Remove the screws securing the rear wall to the cabinet and then remove the rear wall.
- 4). Unclip the thermostat from the refrigerant tubing. Cut the wires connected to the thermostat as close as possible to the thermostat.
- 5). Strip approximately 1/4 inch of shielding off of the refrigerator wires that were cut.
- 6). Connect the color-coded wires from the new thermostat to the refrigerator. For example, connect the yellow wire on the thermostat to the yellow wire from the refrigerator. Insert the unshielded end of each wire into a wire nut and then twist the wire nut clockwise until tight.
- 7). Fill the wire nuts with silicone sealant to secure the wires into the nut.
- 8). Install the thermostat onto the refrigerant tubing using the clip on the bottom.
- 9). Reinstall the rear freezer wall and air ducts and then restore power to the refrigerator.
