How to Refinish Antique Hawaiian Furniture
- 1). Protect the area beneath the antique Hawaiian furniture by covering it with drop cloths.
- 2). Sand the furniture using a palm sander stocked with a low, 120-grit sandpaper. Sand along with the koa wood grain until the finish appears dull.
- 3). Replace the gritty, 120-grit sandpaper with a finer, 220-grit sandpaper. Sand the furniture until it feels smooth.
- 4). Wipe away sawdust using sticky tack cloths.
- 5). Coat the antique Hawaiian furniture with an oil-based stain using a paintbrush specifically manufactured for use with oil-based coatings. Apply a thin coat of stain to avoid excessive runs. Wipe the wet stain from the koa wood using cloth rags. Wait a minimum of four hours for the antique furniture to dry. Skip this step if you desire a glossy varnish finish only.
- 6). Wash your brush with mineral spirits.
- 7). Coat the antique Hawaiian furniture with varnish using the clean paintbrush. Wait a minimum of four hours for the finish to dry.
