3D Pyramid Projects for Kids

1

    Sugar Cubes

    • Build a three-dimensional pyramid using food -- sugar cubes. The first layer of the pyramid needs to be 10 sugar cubes by 10 sugar cubes, meaning you’ll use a total of 100 sugar cubes just for the first layer. Glue this layer to a sturdy piece of cardboard or a piece of wood. Your second layer should be nine by nine, the third layer eight by eight and so forth until you’re down to one sugar cube on the top. If you want to make the pyramid entirely out of food, use egg whites, tartar and confectioner’s sugar to make the mortar. However, this pyramid is still inedible because of the raw egg.

    Cardboard and Sand

    • Construct a pyramid out of cardboard then give it a sand finish. Cut out four matching equilateral triangles with tabs on all three sides of the triangle and a square for the pyramid base. Use thin cardboard or card stock. Glue the pieces together to form the pyramid. Coat all four sides of the pyramid with white glue. Either sprinkle yellow sand over the project or dip each side of the pyramid into a shallow container of sand. Shake off any excesses. Make the pyramid as large or small as you wish.

    Air-Dry Clay

    • Create a pyramid out of air-dry clay, available at craft stores and online retailers. Mold the three-dimensional pyramid out of clay colors that resemble sand, such as brown or yellow, making it any size you’d like. Using a toothpick carve a brick pattern into the four triangular sides of the pyramid. You can also use different colored clays if that’s what you have on hand and paint the project after it has dried and hardened. Leave as is or give the project the same sand finish as the cardboard pyramid by covering your creation in glue then applying sand.

    Paper Mache

    • Use paper mache to make a three-dimensional pyramid. Create the mold for the paper mache using Popsicle sticks or straight drinking straws. Glue four sticks together to form a square and then add four more stick to make the triangular sides. Mix water, flour and white glue together to make the paste. Tear strips of newspaper or white computer paper for the paper mache. Wrap the strips of paper around the Popsicle stick structure. Once the paper mache dries, paint it.
