Does BioWare Have What it Takes to Create a Great Star Wars MMO?
With the announcement of Star Wars: The Old Republic, one of the questions people have been asking is whether or not BioWare has it in them to create a unique, state of the art Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game.
Creating a MMO is not like creating a first person shooter or even a console RPG because in a MMO, you have to worry about hundreds, thousands, or even millions of players.
It's not just "how can I make this single player feel epic?" Instead, the question is, "how do we make everyone feel epic?" There is a lot of debate about whether they have the ability to create this game.
More importantly, people are questioning whether the game is going to be enjoyable or if it will be buggy.
Because Electronic Arts (EA) owns BioWare, there are severe concerns that EA will force BioWare to push the game out faster than it should be which brings up concerns about the quality of the game.
Players of MMOs are very picky about their games and they like one that really is going to be exceptional.
Knowing this, if anyone is going to create a strong MMO based around the Star Wars Universe, BioWare is the one to succeed the best.
They have the guts to take a game where it needs to go, the creative backing, and of course, they are in the actual universe that so many millions of people absolutely love.
Having this universe to back it up, what it gives BioWare is a fan group that will sign up right away.
If they create a good game, they won't need to spend so much time and effort trying to persuade people to try them out; Star Wars fans just will.
They've also created a team that really seems to be working.
Their BioWare Austin office has a huge team that is working on the game.
Easily, they have over three hundred people working on the game which includes writers, planet designers, combat creators, etc.
With the announcement of the game in 2008, but talks about the game being worked on since 2005, it can be assumed that this large team of developers have been able to create a game that will definitely amaze.
Whether or not they succeed, though, depends on one very important thing.
They are doing a decent job keeping the fans interested by releasing new updates once a week.
This helps, but if they want to truly succeed, they need to make sure that they create a good game.
If they release too early, it will result in a buggy game and the fan base that will give them their early push will give up and run away.
Star Wars fans are bitter towards Star Wars MMOs...
Star Wars Galaxies anyone?
