Worming with Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth

    • Food-grade diatomaceous earth is a remedy that can be given to your pet monthly. Mined from underwater bed or from ancient dried lake bottoms, the microscopic one-celled plants are thousands of years old. Safe for the pet to eat, diatomaceous earth with its razor sharp edges of the diatom acts as a killing agent when coming into contact with parasites. The parasites' waxy exoskeleton is lacerated by the sharp edges and the powdery diatomaceous earth absorbs the body fluids of the parasites, thus causing death from dehydration.

    Recommended Feeding Measurements

    • Food-grade diatomaceous earth is rated Food Chemical Codex Grade. If diatamaceous earth were to be labeled as just "food" grade, the public would assume it is only useful as a food supplement, and because DE acts like a chemical by dehydrating insects, it has been labeled "chemical" grade. However, food-grade diatomaceous earth is not a true chemical like a pesticide or insecticide. It is not only safe for oral consumption, it is used by humans as well. As with other wormers, parasites do not build up a tolerance or immunity to its chemical reaction, and rotating wormers is not necessary.

The pet should consume one feeding per day of food-grade diatomaceous earth for at least 60 days. However, diatomaceous earth can be given for longer lengths of time, as your cat or dog will not build an immunity to it as with other wormers.

•For kittens feed 1/2 teaspoon per day
•For cats feed 1 teaspoon per day
•For puppies feed ½ to 1 teaspoon per day
•For dogs under 35 lbs feed 1 teaspoon per day
•For dogs over 35 lbs feed 1 tablespoon per day
•For dogs over 100 lbs feed 2 tablespoons per day

    Feeding Tips

    • Mix the food-grade diatomaceous earth in with the pet's food daily. For the dog or cat that has trouble adjusting to a food-taste change, disguise the food-grade diatomaceous earth by mixing it in with damp food or making a gravy for the food and mixing it in.
