An Introduction to Chainsaws

14
A chainsaw is a movable, mechanical or motorized tool used in logging activities like felling, limbing, and bucking.
Chainsaws started in the 1830's.
Bernard Heine, a German orthopedist is the known inventor.
Heine's invented an instrument with many small cutting teeth.
The pointed edges are angled.
The chain goes around a guiding blade by motivating the handle of a sprocket wheel.
During these years it was primarily used to cut bones.
Joseph Buford Cox and Andreas Stihl developed the modern chain.
In 1927 they created the first gasoline powered chainsaw.
Emil Lerp late on further developed this concept and mass-produced it.
In 1929, Andreas made innovations and founded his own company that sold gasoline powered chainsaws.
The early models of chainsaws were heavy.
It required two persons to handle the device.
Most chainsaws had wheels because they were heavy.
After World War II came an improved version.
The newer model was enough for one person to handle.
Nowadays, chainsaws are mostly electric and easy to manipulate.
The two main types of chainsaws are the gasoline powered chainsaw and the electric chainsaw.
Gasoline powered chainsaws are usually more heavy-duty and used outdoors for more tedious jobs.
Electric chainsaws weigh lighter and safer to use.
They are better suited in residential areas because the machine is quiet and emission-free.
It can also be used for light works in the backyard or garden.
Maintenance is easier.
A chainsaw is composed of a small engine, guide bar, and a cutting chain.
The teeth are actually a row of sharp blades.
A skip tooth reduces the risk of clogging when cutting a very soft wood.
Chainsaw carving is slowly becoming popular.
Thus chainsaws with narrow-tipped bars are being produced for this purpose.
They may be 'quarter tipped," 'nickel tipped' or "dimmed tipped" bars depending on the size of the round tip.
Maintenance Chainsaws need to be lubricated regularly.
Fuel is used to lubricate the engine.
Fuel with 2 to 5% oil is enough, depending on the model.
An oil reservoir on the other hand is used to lubricate the blades.
Regular cleaning is very important to keep your machine working in excellent condition.
Sawdust from logging tends to accumulate with continued use.
This clogs the air intake filter.
Use compressed air to remove these dusts.
Otherwise, wash with clean gas To keep the chains sharp, use a round file or a jig.
If you choose to use specialized electric sharpening jig, remove the chain from the saw.
