Information on Fireplaces
- Some of the earliest fireplaces consisted of pits made with stone. The fumes and gases of the fire were released through holes in the ceilings of the structures.
- Fireplaces vary based on features, sizes and types. Some features you might find in a fireplace include a mantel, foundation, firebox, grate, flue, chimney crane, smoke chamber, lintel or a hearth.
- Most fireplaces are constructed with brick, stone or reinforced concrete. There are also metal box fireplaces as well as vent-free fireplaces that burn natural gas, propane or gels.
- Many different types of accessories can be used to operate a fireplace. Some of these accessories include grates, fireguards, pokers, tongs, andirons, shovels, brushes and tool stands.
- According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 36 percent of all home fires in rural areas are related to home heating or fireplace fires.
