How to Install Light Fixtures on a Junction Box
- 1). Turn off the electric power to the junction box location at the main fuse or breaker panel.
- 2). Extract the circuit wires from the junction box and separate the three wires. There will be a black wire, referred to as the "hot" lead, that carries the current to the fixture, a white or "neutral lead" that carries the current back to complete the circuit and a bare copper grounding wire.
- 3). Remove 1/2 inch of the plastic wire covering, called insulation, from each of the circuit wires using wire strippers or a utility knife.
- 4). Attach the light fixture mounting bracket to the junction box following the manufacturer's instructions with the two screws provided and tighten until the bracket is held firmly against the wall or ceiling surface.
- 5). Hold the light fixture beside the junction box to connect the wiring. Connect the black wires by placing them together and screwing a wire nut onto the ends.
- 6). Repeat Step 5 for the white wires.
- 7). Connect the bare copper grounding wire from the junction box to the green insulated wire from the light fixture by placing them together and screwing a wire nut onto the ends.
- 8). Slide the connected electrical wires into the junction box and install the fixture base to the mounting bracket following the manufacturer's instructions for the fixture. Secure the fixture base with the hardware provided.
- 9). Install the fixture's bulbs as recommended by the manufacturer and the fixture's globe or light cover, if applicable.
- 10
