Non-Prescription Treatment for Cat Roundworms

51

    Identification

    • There are two types of roundworms that affect cats: Toxascaris leonina and Toxocara cati. These parasites absorb nutrients in your cat's intestines.

    Diagnosis

    • Adult roundworms may be visualized in feces or vomit. Worms can be seen when a veterinarian tests fecal samples.

    Treatment

    • In addition to prescription medications, there are two non-prescription medications available for the treatment of roundworms. Hartz Advanced Care Liquid Wormer and Seargent's Worm Away are available over the counter. These brand-name medications both contain the active ingredient piperazine, which is effective against ascarids.

    Considerations

    • Cats under six weeks of age, or cats who are elderly, pregnant or immune compromised should not be given roundworm medication without the supervision of a licensed veterinary medical professional.

    Warning

    • Roundworms are zoonotic, meaning they are transmissible to humans. Observe proper sanitation and hygiene protocols to avoid infection.

    Effects

    • Side effects are not common with piperazine. Nausea, vomiting and muscle tremors occur in the event of an overdose. In animals with a large quantity of roundworms, intestinal obstruction or rupture may occur.
