Fishing rods today are much more technically advanced and of course contain reels to help retrieve the fish that are caught, unlike fishing poles or cane poles from yesteryear. The spinning rod is a sophisticated feature that allows the entire rod or shaft other than the handle to move that allows maximum flexibility. This way it aids in catching fish that are struggling when caught on a snare bait.

Today's fishing rods are generally much thicker at the handle and become thinner and more tapered at the tip. This allows for more stability and flexible use of the shafts entire length. A standard fishing rod will measure about 6 feet and up depending on the type of fishing activity that will be done. One of the less sophisticated type of fishing apparatus is a cane pole. Normally it is made of bamboo or other material that is flexible and has a very basic fly line that is attached to it.

A cane pole normally will not have a reel to retrieve fish that is caught. This is also known as angling. The spinning rods are the most popular that are used today. You can use these for light fish or for heavier type fish and are normally used for trout fishing, bass and walleye. The reason that spinning rods are used mostly in bass fishing competition is that they are very flexible and tolerant to stress. They can accommodate much tougher and bigger fly lines.

For heavy lures and depths that are around 200 feet under the surface of the ocean, a jigging rod is the way to go. These rods are very very solid and heavy which is important during the extreme cards that can be quite erratic underseas. A lot of fishermen who use this rod to catch bottom toilers found at the bottom of the sea which may include cod and halibut.
